Have you ever been white water rafting? Have you ever been on a trip when someone was not participating; not putting their paddle in the water? And instead they were taking pictures, posting to social media, or just generally enjoying the ride without participating?

I’ve been there. We had a person on our trip a couple of years ago. She was enamored with the beauty of the surroundings of the Royal Gorge. She decided that our rafting trip was only fit for her as a sightseeing excursion rather than also being a test of our teamwork. Our inflatable raft kept hitting rocks and nearly flipped over, because that person wasn’t paddling and assisting the team.

That lesson of the bouncy ride we endured in the Royal Gorge serves as a great lesson for project management and everyone on the team. Everyone has to be rowing and paddling; doing their part.

Someone has to call these people out. Or take the boat to the shore, drop them off, and replace them with someone who will do their part.

Eventually, our guide finally gave up on this one member of our raft team. He told her to sit in the front and act as if it was the Titanic! She never got thrown over, but it certainly made for a better trip once we realized she was not going to paddle. We just made adjustments with the rest of the team so that we had the boat surrounded with willing and able paddlers.
